Oh hello!

Thank you for being interested in seeing more of my stuff!

2012 Public Building Studio: Taidemuseo - Temporary Exhibition Center, TUT

TAIDEMUSEO, a centre for temporary exhibitions is located in in the heart of Tampere, Finland. The building site is next to the main street Pirkankatu and is the ending point of Puutarhakatu. A market square is situated on the opposite side of the planning area, which is further surrounded by apartment buildings. The new museum serves as an extension for an already existing structure from 1931 by Hilja Gestrin.

The idea for the museum square is to create a place where people can gather. The play with the pavement should represent the art inside of the museum. The square should furhter serve for outdoor exhibitions throughout the year.

THE CONCEPT

The influence for the building shape was the old museum. It consists of a big cube with a small cube on top. Considering a new exhibition space with no windows, the cube idea was adapted and turned into a more modern combination. The exhibition cube is now hanging into a secondary cube, which hosts the office and administration spaces, public service spaces and maintanance facilities. A third cube The lobby is in a third cube, which combines the old and the new structure.

THE FACADE

Although the exhibition cube is a massive building of reinforced concrete it should give the visitor the impression of a light structure. This is achieved by “hanging” it into a secondary cube. To stabilize it the secondary cube consists of a load bearing steel structure with different shaped cut outs, which allow the sunlight to break in and create an interesting shadow pattern. Like treetops in a forest the apperance of the inside changes during the course of the day. In dark winter days the light from inside the cube breakes through the facade and illumintes the square.
