Oh hello!

Thank you for being interested in seeing more of my stuff!

2012, ARA Asunto 2049, International Housing Design Competition for Students

deals with the problematic of Finland’s changing society. We already have to face the problem of an ageing population, which will increase within the years. The cities will become bigger and more dense, not only because of the increasing number of immigrants. Living space within the city will become rare, therefor more expensive and challenging. Housing systems of the future must address to this problem.

The tenants of GROW, a social housing system do not rent the floor, but rent the walls. They can choose between an indoor element, an outdoor element and a glass element, which can be attached to a grid of 5m x 5m x 1.5m reinforced concrete.

This grid can be connected arbitrarily and can therefor result in different building shapes. To demonstrate this system, one possibility is successfully shown. With the rented wall elements the tenants can create their individual space according to their needs, from 23m² up to 123m². When the tenant moves out the wooden wall elements can be replaced by others and new space for different needs can be created. Therefor the building is in constant movement with its inhabitants and never rests.

The apartments can only be reached by walking through the blooming heart of the building, the green house. In first place this should encourage the inhabitants to interact with each other and second to create a warm and sustainable atmosphere.

To further fulfill the needs of the inhabitants, which will increase in the future, an existing neighbouring industry building is used as community space. The roof has been removed and replaced by a steel and glass structure, to enable more light to enter. The building is devided into five parts: an active area including a gym and a sauna, a leasure area consisting of an evergreen park, a social area with childcare and a community kitchen, a planting area with community gardening and a working area with a workshop and storage space.

No matter if single, couple, family, elderly or student: GROW tries to fulfill the needs of everybody and makes an attempt to unite different generations and cultures.
